Born in Galveston in 1919, Mitchell studied petroleum engineering at Texas A&M University. After World War II, he founded Mitchell Energy & Development Corp., where he revolutionized the industry with his development of hydraulic fracturing technology. This technique, also known as “fracking,” unlocked vast reserves of natural gas, dramatically changing the energy landscape in Texas and across the U.S.
