Galveston Fire Department Reform

October 4, 1886 in Galveston History

On October 4, 1886, after a series of fires threatened Galveston’s commercial district, the city officially moved to modernize and reform its fire department. This included better organization, more resources, and new equipment, marking a shift toward improved public safety.

The reforms came after the Great Fire of 1885 which had a devastating effect on the city’s business district as well as residents. Texas’ first paid fire department, formed right here in Galveston, was a month old. The fires proved to be more than the department could handle. The fire ravaged many city blocks and left thousands without a home.

This promoted change to building structures and illustrated a need for modern equipment. This was the first of many Galveston Fire Department Reform measures as the city led the way in innovative fire fighting.
