Galveston’s First Public Library Established

November 28, 1859

The Rosenberg Library, Galveston’s first public library, was founded thanks to philanthropist Henry Rosenberg. Although the library building we know today wasn’t completed until the early 1900s, the initial founding marked a commitment to literacy and education in Galveston, making it the oldest public library in continuous operation in Texas.

Galveston’s Ursuline Convent and Academy

Opening of Galveston’s Ursuline Convent and Academy – November 20, 1857

The Ursuline Sisters opened their convent and academy, one of the first schools in Texas dedicated to girls’ education. The academy grew into a highly respected institution and was known for sheltering residents during storms and epidemics. Although it was destroyed in the 1900 Hurricane, the convent’s legacy endures as a pioneer of education in Texas.
